SCHOOL BUS DRIVER

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of

1. Provisions of the California Vehicle Code, California Education Code, District policies and requirements, and other applicable regulations related to the operation of vehicles used to transport students.
2. Local traffic laws and regulations, including working knowledge of local transportation corridors, roads, and geography.
3. Basic first aid practices, procedures, and techniques.
4. Bus and vehicle safety inspection and preventive maintenance requirements.
5. Supervision and control of student passengers.
6. Safe driving practices and defensive driving techniques.
7. Safety rules, regulations, policies, and procedures applicable to the position.

Ability to

1. Safely and efficiently operate a variety of vehicles and equipment used in student transportation.
2. Learn to operate and effectively use two-way radio communication equipment.
3. Exercise good judgment and extreme caution when driving and transporting students.
4. Maintain valid certification as a school bus driver in accordance with applicable state regulations.
5. Meet and maintain first aid requirements prescribed by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
6. Establish and maintain appropriate student conduct and discipline in all District transportation vehicles.
7. Understand and carry out verbal and written instructions, policies, procedures, and regulations independently.
8. Communicate effectively and tactfully, both verbally and in writing.
9. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with District personnel, students, parents, and the public.
10. Follow designated safety regulations and procedures associated with the position.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

1. Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
2. Possession and maintenance of a valid California School Bus Driver Certificate.
3. Minimum of two (2) years of successful driving experience with a demonstrated record of safe driving; or experience as a school bus driver with a safe driving record in compliance with applicable California Vehicle Code requirements.
4. A work history demonstrating dependability, reliability, and responsible work habits.

REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation

JOB GOAL

To safely and efficiently transport students to and from school and school-related activities along designated routes and to ensure the safety, security, and well-being of students while they are passengers in District transportation vehicles.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Drives a school transportation vehicle along prescribed routes and according to established schedules, picking up and discharging students at designated stops.
2. Escorts and assists students on and off the vehicle and across streets when necessary.
3. Transports students and teachers on field trips and other school-related activities to various locations, following designated routes and instructions provided by the dispatcher.
4. Maintains order and appropriate student conduct in accordance with District policies; instructs students regarding safety regulations, procedures, and appropriate passenger behavior.
5. Conducts daily safety and operational inspections of the assigned vehicle in accordance with established procedures.
6. Checks fluid and air levels on the bus as required and adds fuel, water, fluids, or air as necessary.
7. Maintains the cleanliness of the vehicle to ensure a safe and sanitary operating environment; sweeps and washes the interior and exterior as required.
8. Identifies and immediately reports required mechanical repairs or safety concerns.
9. Maintains accurate records, including student counts, time sheets, mileage, repair requests, discipline notices, and other required documentation; prepares reports as necessary.
10. Performs standard school bus driving duties and related transportation functions as assigned.
11. Follows all District policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
12. Participates in District in-service training and professional development as required.
13. Understands and supports the Mission and Core Values of the District.
14. Performs other related duties as assigned.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

1. Attends meetings and training related to safety, first aid, transportation procedures, updates, and other job-related matters as required.
2. Attends driver training programs to maintain current knowledge of the California Vehicle Code, California Education Code, and other applicable laws and regulations related to the transportation of students.
3. Ensures the security of District buses and transportation equipment at all times by following procedures prescribed by the District.
4. Evacuates the vehicle in a safe and timely manner when necessary and participates in required evacuation drills in accordance with applicable laws and District procedures; completes required documentation and reports.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

1. Able to meet the minimum physical requirements prescribed by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
2. Visual ability to read handwritten and typed documents and view displays and information on various equipment and devices.
3. Able to communicate effectively in English.
4. Able to hear normal-range verbal conversation.
5. Able to sustain constant attention to vehicle operation, traffic, and road conditions while monitoring and maintaining appropriate student passenger behavior for extended periods of time.
6. Able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, and walk.
7. Able to sit for sustained periods of time.
8. Able to climb slopes, stairs, steps, ramps, and ladders.
9. Able to lift up to twenty (20) pounds frequently and forty (40) pounds occasionally.
10. Able to carry up to twenty (20) pounds frequently and forty (40) pounds occasionally.
11. Able to demonstrate sufficient shoulder external and internal rotation to reach and operate bus and communication controls.
12. Able to demonstrate sufficient shoulder abduction and adduction to reach and operate bus and communication controls.
13. Able to demonstrate sufficient elbow flexion and extension to reach and operate bus and communication controls.
14. Able to demonstrate sufficient shoulder extension and flexion to reach and operate bus and communication controls.
15. Able to demonstrate sufficient range of motion for back lateral flexion.
16. Able to demonstrate sufficient range of motion for hip flexion and extension.
17. Able to demonstrate sufficient range of motion for knee flexion.
18. Able to work safely and effectively at various elevated heights.
19. Able to work safely and effectively with a variety of cleaning and chemical agents used in the performance of assigned duties.
20. Able to operate office equipment, communication equipment, and two-way radios safely and effectively.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Possession and maintenance of a valid California Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class A or B, with required passenger endorsement(s).
2. Possession and maintenance of a valid California School Bus Driver Certificate.
3. Possession and maintenance of a valid medical certificate as required by applicable regulations.
4. Possession and maintenance of valid First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
5. Possession and maintenance of a safe driving record in compliance with applicable California Vehicle Code requirements.
6. Must properly use all safety equipment designated for the position.
7. Some positions in this classification may require the ability to read, write, and/or speak a second language.
